Based on observation, my work covers a wide range of subject matter painted in oils.  I seek to evoke the atmospheric and emotional aspects of everyday objects and scenes.

I approach painting as an uplifting, life-enriching activity that can reveal mysterious and magical aspects of everyday life.  My painting can be stimulated by many things: the play of light on an interior wall, the nuanced atmosphere of a still, misty day, or an object which happens to fascinate me.

I have been inspired by the rich ambience found in the work of artists such as Rembrandt and Chardin, as well as the melancholic mood and superb compositional skills of Hopper.  Often, a figurative interpretation can be a starting point for more intuitive work that can approach abstraction.  I am particularly interested in developing expressive representations of painterly form, texture and colour that can range from the subtle to the spectacular.
