Figurative sculpture and the art of bronze casting have fascinated me since my early years at Ipswich Art School.
After completing a foundation course in fine art and a 3 year course in graphics, I pursued a career in graphic design and advertising. However I continued to draw the figure from life and often experimented with figurative sculpture and casting in various materials. Eventually my passion to interpret the human form and the desire to practise bronze casting was to become a full time vocation.
Initially I learnt the more traditional bronze casting methods but then migrated to more recent techniques and materials, with the use of ceramic shell. This seemed more suited to my work, and to allow myself more flexibility I decided to set up my own foundry facilities.
Intrigued by both musculoskeletal structure and surface contour and form I seem to have adopted two quite different interpretations.
My small lady figures express an unselfconscious quality and charm within the soft, smooth contours, enhanced by the simplistic modelling and deep, marbled patinations.
My gymnastic figures convey the power and energy of the athletic form accentuated by using a loose, intuitive approach capturing the grace and motion of the male and female physique.
I draw from life to develop my observational skills and create new pieces but nothing inspires me more than seeing glowing, liquid bronze, flowing from a cherry red crucible into moulds of my creation and the anticipation of what will be revealed when they have cooled.
I believe the process can lead the work and the work can lead the process. Having the ability to undertake all aspects brings about a fascinating evolution and I look forward to the inspirational challenges this offers.
